Saturday, July 30th: SEMI-FINALS:  Layritz vs Hastings

The boys came out ready to play, eventhough Hastings had mercied us only 48hrs ago. Jacob Moss is again outstanding as our starting pitcher. Ryan Cleaver scores in the first inning and we lead 1-0.  Runners on every inning but we can not get some insurance runs. Hastings ties it up in the fifth and we are thrown out at the plate so its 1-1 entering the 6th inning.  Their bats come alive and we valiantly fight to the last strike but to no avail.

FINAL SCORE:  Hastings 3, Layritz 1.   THANKS TO ALL LAYRITZ  FAMILIES FOR THE SUPPORT!  The paper estimated the crowd at 1,000 people today.

Friday July 29th vs Lynn Valley:  WIN and we are in the semi-finals of the BC's.

WOW, what a game.  Lynn Valley comes with their ace and K's our first nine batters.  Jesse Simpson matches him out for out til he reaches his pitch limit after five innings--still tied 0-0. Justice Carter replaces him on the hill. Still scoreless thru, 6,7,8,and 9 innings--eventhough Lynn Valley had bases loaded with one out but failed to score. Ryan Cleaver lays down a great bunt to start the 10th and later scores. BUT, LV also scores and we continue. 11TH inning solves nothing. Ryely Abbott scores on an RBI from Jake Wilhelm in the 12th inning and Justice K's the 3rd out on his 85th pitch.  A total of 170 pitches thrown by Jesse/Justice: just ONE run allowed.

FINAL SCORE:  LAYRITZ 2, LYNN VALLEY 1 ( record 3-3, 4th place, SEMI FINALS EARNED)

Thurs July 28 vs Hastings, 2pm:

A tough start as Hastings come up with five big runs in the 1st inning.  Ryan "Cola" Christenson pitches a 1-2-3 second inning ( THREE pitches, three outs!) and shuts them out in the 3rd inning. But a few errors cost us in the fourth.

FINAL SCORE: Hastings 10, Layritz 0

Wed July 27 vs Langley:

A good start, but tough finish for the boys.  Runners on in 1st/2nd inning but could not get the big hit.  Langley scores one in the 3rd to lead 1-0 after Trey Crust does well to keep them at bay. Araresso Cochrane, Jesse Simpson, Jake Wilhelm, and Ryley Abbott pitch well but Langley's bats come ALIVE and a few errors help as well.  Justice Carter picks up a RBI for us. Tomorrow is a new day!

FINAL SCORE: LANGLEY 14, LAYRITZ 1 ( record now 2-2)

Tuesday July 26 vs Trail:

Again defense and pitching play a huge part in this game.  Trail scores one run in the 3rd inning as Jacob Potter throws three innings with 6 K's and no earned runs.  He also bunts in the 4th inning with Ryan Cleaver at 1st base who tried to score after a throwing error but was called out at the plate on a VERY close, contentious play.  Jacob later scores on a pass ball and Andrew Baxter delivers a clutch, 2-out hit to score Ryley Abbott. Justice Carter throws three shutout innings and was aided by nice defensive plays by (2B) Joel Barton, (3B) Ryan Christenson, and a gem by (ss)Jake Wilhelm to seal the deal.

FINAL SCORE:  Trail 1, Layritz 2.  (now 2-1)

Sunday July 24 vs Little Mountain

What a game vs the defending Canadian champs!!  Little Mountain scores two in the 1st inning but Justice Carter, Jacob Potter, and Jesse Simpson allow no more til the 6th inning.  Ryley Abbott crushes a 3-2 pitch over the LF fence in the 2nd inning to cut the lead in half.  No scoring in the middle innings due in no small part to Jake Wilhelm turning two double plays at SS. An error leads to a run in the top of the 6th inning to give LMB a 3-1 lead but Layritz never quits. Jesse Simpson leads off with a double and scores on Ryley's sac fly.  Trey Crust hits  a single to RF that scores Joel Barton from 2B on the closest of plays to tie the score at 3-3. A bases loaded walk with two outs gives LMB a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th and no heroics follow for the green team this time.

Final Score: LMB 4, LAYRITZ 3 (7 innings) ( ...now 1-1)

Saturday, July 23 vs HAMPTON

Opening game for both teams and nerves were abound. Only two hits for Layritz.  Gio Walt scores on a wild pitch in the first inning and that was enough behind the masterful pitching of Jacob Moss.  Jacob throws a 78-pitch, complete game,  one-hitter with an amazing FIFTEEN strikeouts for the win to lead us to victory.

FINAL SCORE:  HAMPTON 0, LAYRITZ 1 ( now 1-0)

The 10th Annual McDonald's Challenger Celebrity Golf Classic will be held this year on Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 at Meadow Gardens Golf Club.  Over the past 9 years close to $450,000 has been raised to support children's charities across BC, with the main thrust going towards Little League Challenger Division, a division for children with cognitive or physical disabilities.  This gives those children a chance to participate in Little Leaugue that might not otherwise have been able to do.  Check out this PDF for full details with contact and registration information.
