2005 Major Baseball Tournament Team

The 2005 Major Boys Tournament team put on a pretty good show this year. Congratulations to all of you for making it to the final with a 6 win, 1 loss record. It was a great accomplishment as every player on this year's team was playing at this level for the first time. In fact for 3 players, this was their first year in the majors, and here they were on a tournanment team. I know all of Layritz is proud of you. On behalf of Dave Murdoch, Mike Salter, and myself, we wish you the best in your respective futures. Finally a special thanks to this year's parent group. Just like the 2004 parent team, you all gave us wonderful support, and around the diamond you were a real class act.

2005 Junior Softball Tournament Team

Layritz Softball fielded two Junior Girls teams in 2005. They played an interlocking schedule around town. At the end of the spring (regular) season and playoffs, twelve players came together to form the Junior Girls Tournament Team.
After many weeks of practicing, learning situations and strategies, the girls were able to play a couple of exhibition games before hosting the Canadian Championships in August.
The players represented themselves, and Layritz well, playing competitively against a strong Ontario team, and the winning B.C. team from Triangle. They played hard, didn’t give up, and showed great sportsmanship. They served us well as Ambassadors of Little League. WELL DONE GIRLS!!

2005 Minor Baseball Tournament Team

Twenty-four boys attended the tryouts for the 2005 edition of the Layritz Tournament team. Though deciding to go with a younger team than normal, the manager and coaches all believed they were choosing the best players possible for the team. Players were chosen not only for talent, but also on the basis of team chemistry and work ethic. And the players did not disappoint.
After two weeks of practices, the tournament was played at Ambassador Park. Trailing 5-2 after three innings to Oak Bay, the Layritz bats came alive and eventually carried the team to 25-5 victory. Perseverance and coming from behind became a trademark of this team. In the second game, we trailed 11-2 to Triangle but again the boys rallied to go 2-0 after a 20-17 victory. First place was on the line when we lost 4-1 to a very strong Sidney squad. Sidney only got four hits in what turned out to be a very good defensive battle. Lastly, National was the opponent with the winner moving on to the playoffs and the losers going home. The team wanted a strong start and that they did!! The game was over after 3 ½ innings with Layritz prevailing 16-2. We were in the semi-finals after finishing second in our group.
We played Beacon Hill, the other pool winner, in the semi-finals. Again we were behind early, and again we rallied. Losing 5-2, the boys rallied to take a 9-5 lead after five innings. Beacon Hill who had rallied in every game in the sixth inning, did so again against us. But the boys held strong and after throwing out the tying run at third base, held on for a 9-8 hard-fought victory. We were off to the finals versus Sidney.
The final was again a defensive battle. Sidney scored one run in the first and then the defense for both teams took over. No more scoring occurred until we tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. Three runs in the fifth and four more with two outs in the sixth carried a deserving Sidney squad to a 8-1 victory in the final, but the score was definitely not indicative of the closeness of the game.
Sidney may have won the tournament, but the three coaches and parents could not have been any more proud of our boys. And with seven players on the team being only nine years old, next year’s team will indeed be a team to be reckoned with in 2006!!

2005 Minor Softball Tournament Team

This year's Minor Softball tournament was hosted at Lakehill. The teams that participated were Lakehill, Beacon Hill, National, Triangle, Sidney, and Layritz. The girls did very well in the tournament considering we had to pick up two, 8 year olds to field a team. We won 3 out of 5 games, and scored a ton of runs in those games. We had lots of fun, played hard, and really improved throughout the week. All in all it was a great tournament.

2005 Mini Minor Tournament Team

Central Saanich Little League hosted a Mini Minor Jamboree on May 21-22, 2005. Layritz fielded a team made up of boys from 4 different teams. We played 4 games and participated in a skills competition where players received ribbons for throwing, catching, hitting and running the bases. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved!
