2010 11/12 Baseball Tournament Team

The 11/12 Baseball Team are the District 7 Champions and will now represent D7 at the Provincial Tournament in New West Minister.

Provincial Tournament News

Follow the boys with Major Baseball Provincial Championship Coverage:  CTV News  or New Westminister Baseball   from July 23 to Aug 1

Sat, Jul 31st SEMI FINAL:  GONE FISHING!!  Little Mountain flat-out were the better team today, and got a few bounces as well.  Final Score was 14-1.  Kudos to Daniel Barrodale for getting them 1-2-3 in the 4th inning, all being strikeouts. All are proud of the boys, but in the end the top-3 teams were more talented than we were.  THANKS FOR THE RIDE BOYS!

Fri, Jul 30th:  Playing Whalley with a playoff spot on the line. 0-0 after one inning.  Justice Carter pulled after 2 innings, having pitched shut-out baseball. Layritz scores 4 in the second, 3 in the third, and 2 in the fourth to lead 9-0 after 4 innings hi-lighted by Jesse Mycock's triple and RBI's from Adam Bontkes, Mason Carter, Daniel Barrodale, and a 2-run HR from Nick Seginowich.  Then Whalley came alive and got 3 HR's and 7 runs in the 5th inning to trail 9-7 after 5. HOWEVER, we stayed strong and pulled out a 10-8 victory after GREAT catches from Jesse and Gio Walt in the field.  Jacob Potter got the save after good pitching efforts from Jesse, Adam, and Nick following Justice.

Thurs, Jul 29th:  Hastings is the opponent with BC's #1 pitcher Mateo Vincelli.  We started OK with a 2-2 tie after one inning with a couple of hits from Hastings and a couple of errors from us.  Justice Carter accounted for our 2 RBI's.  Defensive errors again cost us later and some nice opposition hitting making the final 11-4.  Whalley Friday and a win almost puts us in the playoffs, while a loss does not definitely eliminate us.

Wed, Jul. 28th: Layritz vs West Vanc: We split a double-header in June at our park so we knew it would be a close game. They came at us with their ace but he was wild early and we chased him in the first inning, leading 5-0.  The bats then went quiet but fantastic pitching from Nick Seginowich, Adam Bontkes, Daniel Barrodale, Jacob Potter, and Shaun Henry kept them to two runs overall. Fine defensive plays by Kyle Mace and Daniel helped the pitchers as well.  Jacob and Shaun led with doubles in our 5-run last inning to win the game 11-2.

Tuesday: Jul 27th.  Another test for our boys and another loss.  We spotted host New West a 6-0 lead after 2 innings and fought back valiantly but could not catch up, despite a big 2-RBI triple from Jesse Mycock and 2 extra-base hits from Dan Barrodale. We kept getting within 2 runs but New West would come back and score during their next bats. In the end, New West out-hit and played better defense and deserved the 9-5 victory.

Jul 26th:  A tough day for our boys, but a great start.  Playing the tourney-favoured Little Mountain team, we started great but could not hold on.  Layritz built a 4-0 lead into the 3rd inning due to some walks, RBI hits by Justice and Mason Carter, and fabulous shut-out pitching from Jacob Potter. Jacob was pulled in the 3rd inning to preserve him for later and unfortunately the Little Mountain bats awoke, just as our bats fell asleep.  We never scored again and they put 11 unanswered runs on the board to win 11-4.  Next up is host New Westminster Tuesday.

PLEASE check out CTV news and their website for a wonderful interview and story about Manager Mark Ward and Coach Dave Murdoch LATER THIS WEEK.

Sat, July 24:  A GOOD start for the boys at the BC Championships!  We were nervous at the start and in warm-up but Adam Bontkes pitched a 1-2-3 first inning and we manufactured 2 runs in the bottom of the first after a big hit from Jesse Mycock.  Trail bounced right back and lead 3-2 after 2 1/2 innings. Layritz broke the game open in our next at-bat.  Two 11-year olds, Jacob Potter and Justice Carter, both hit 2-RBI singles to give us a 6-3 lead.  Daniel Barrodale came into pitch and shut them down, along with Justice later in the game.  Final score...Layritz 11, Trail 4 after some more timely hitting by Nick Seginowich and Jacob Moss, among others. Next up is tourney-favourite Little Mountain on Monday. Stay tuned for updates as well as CTV NEWS with extensive TV and web coverage.

2010 9/10 Baseball Tournament Team

The Baseball 9 and 10 year old All Star team from Layritz had a great tournament in 2010. While they finished second in the District 7 tournament, they had the most winning record of the six teams that participated.  This season, 14 players were selected for the team. There were at least 3 boys who wanted to play and deserved to be on the team, but due to prior commitments, could not attend every game.  In the end we only had 14 players twice and 12 players once, in our seven game tournament.  The team started practicing right after closing ceremonies and had 9 practices in the ten days prior to their tournament.  The first game of the tournament was the toughest but the boys managed to out-hit Beacon Hill winning 14-5. The next four games saw the Layritz kids handing out four mercy shortened mercy games to Hampton, National, Lakehill, and Central Saanich.
Layritz finished first in the round robin with a game record of 5 – 0.  The semi-final game against the refocused Central Saanich team was more of a battle. For the first 4 innings it was a 3 run game, until the gap widened to a 9-4 victory.   Things were a lot tougher in the final facing a talented pitcher from Beacon Hill who lasted into the 5th inning.  There certainly was a downside to never experiencing being behind at any other time in the tournament. Unable to mount a comeback, the team lost their first and final game 7-1.
Well done boys. You impressed us all and thanks for the fun.

2010 9/10 Softball Tournament Team

The 9/10 girls are the 2010 District Champions. Well done players and coaches.

 2010 City Minor Baseball Team

Layritz’s Minor Baseball Team Van Isle Water has won the City Championship. They went 3-0 throughout the double knockout tournament.  The bats were strong, the base running  was exceptional (smart and aggressive). What was really impressive was that this tournament was won on great defense, and quality pitching. The defense was sharp, holding opposing teams down inning after inning. In the final game Layritz only let up 5 runs.  While the pitching was sharp, the depth was the difference. Layritz used 6 different pitchers over the 3 games.
What we loved most about watching this team was that each and every player contributed throughout this tournament. This was truly a team effort and no one single player stood out from the rest. We were very proud of each and every player. Congratulations boys!! Well done!!
