2006, 11/12 Major Baseball Tournament Team

The 11/12 major boys made it to the final four but were stopped in the semi-finals by Beacon Hill's one and only ace pitcher. This allowed Hampton to face Beacon Hill's second string pitchers in the final.  Hampton is a good team and is currently representing District 7 at the Provincials in North Vancouver.  Thanks to our troops who worked hard and raised their level of play considerably over the past 3 weeks. Individually and collectively you're a great bunch and I hope this was a great experience for all of you.  Thanks also to the dugout coaches - Dave Murdoch and Wayne Gardler for their tireless efforts to improve the skills of each and every player with this team.  Kudos also to Mike Watson. Mike came out of retirement this year to help during the season and he was there with the tournament team as well.   Finally, but most importantly, a very special thanks to the tournament team parents. In spite of what we all say, it isn't just about the kids.  It's about you and every other parent at Layritz.  If your son or daughter is on our team then you are too...without your support of both the coaching staff and all the players, on and off the field , our team simply can't be as good as it can be. Thanks folks, you were great...
Mark Ward

2006, 11/12 Fastball Tournament Team

The girls of the Layritz 2006 11/12 Fastball Tournament Team are this year's Canadian Champions. Congratulations girls.  Here they are at the Little League World Series in Portland Oregon.

2006, 9/10 Softball Tournament Team

This year's  8/9/10 Girls Softball Tournament Team won the 2006 District 7 Championship!!!  This outstanding team consisted of 13 incredible young ladies!  Dana Bell, Victoria Bloomfield, Breanna Dunn, Tasia Hartnell, Torrie Johnson, Mikayla Keown,Charlie Kocurek, Alyssa Kreager, Jenn Mace, Jenelle Parker, Lexi Redman, Kaitlyn Tucker, Hailey Young.
Team Layritz was undefeated, having a 6-0 record throughout the tournament. In a short period of time, this group of girls put together a display of true sportsmanship, and team effort, including excellent pitching, fantastic fielding, clutch hitting, and heads-up base running.
In the final game of the tournament we were down 9-0 in the third inning. With some impressive team effort we were able to come back and win the game 10-9 in the bottom of the sixth inning!!
A special thanks to all the parents and fans who came out to watch and cheer us on. It was a very impressive turn out for every game!
Coaches Doug, Paul, and Brad want to let all the girls know how proud we are of all of you! It was a privilege to have been  part of such a great team.

2006, 9/10 Baseball Tournament Team

The 2006 Layritz 9-10 team had a great tournament this year even though they fell short of their goal of winning the championship. Layritz ended up second after the round-robin with a fantastic 6-1 record. In the round-robin, two bad innings would ultimately lead to trouble when tournament runners-up Hampton scored six runs in the top of the first on their way to giving Layritz its only round robin defeat. Layritz met Esquimalt for the second time in the semifinals.  In the round robin, a very strong batting display and a masterful pitching performance by Morgan Varley led to a lopsided Layritz victory.  However the playoffs were a different story. Esquimalt took the early lead but Layritz battled back to take a 5-3 lead after the fourth inning. This lead was not to last though.  Again, one inning was the difference as Esquimalt scored six runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.  To the credit of all team members, not one player gave up and battled to the end.  Even with two outs in the sixth, Layritz battled hard, but eventually lost 9-6.  In the final, Esquimalt once again battled from behind and scored two runs in the top of the sixth to score a 5-4 victory over Hampton.  A dramatic home run over the fence at center field was the tournament-winning run.
The coaching staff of Dave and Dave, and all of Layritz Park, are very proud of the intensity, hard work, and sportsmanship shown by this team.  Proudly representing Layritz were Spencer Scotney, Wesley Block, Daniel Borges, Eric Ashlee, Nick Bohlender, Jared Hanley, Morgan Varley, Tanner Hess, Mike Potter, Ryan Sylvester, Mitch Meek, and Evan Badry.
The other heros of this story are the many volunteers who helped make this tournament a huge success and a fun time for all the players of the district.
Thanks to all the parents of players and the many members of the Layritz family who put in countless hours in the concession and preparing the grounds to help make this tournament what it was. Thanks to the Umpires for performing countless hours of service. Thanks to the Layritz fans who came out to cheer and support our team at their games. Finally, thanks to the teams of District 7 for being part of a great 11 days.

 2006 City Minor Baseball Team

Layritz Baseball team Rand Automotive won the  City Minor's Baseball Tournament for 2006.

The tournament finale started out as the opening game did for our boys---very slowly!!  Losing 14-5 to Oak Bay in the opening game meant Layritz had to qualify via the loser’s bracket to reach the finals.  But that is exactly what they did in this double knockout tournament.  On successive days and facing elimination, Layritz defeated and, eliminated Lakehill, National, Esquimalt, and Hampton.  That allowed the Layritz boys to reach the finals where they would battle  Oak Bay once again. To claim the title,  they would have to defeat Oak Bay twice in a row. The first game the boys came out swinging the bat and parlayed their offence into a 12-8 victory to set-up the winner-take-all final the following evening. Playing their seventh game in seven nights, Layritz started tentatively in the final game and were down 4-1 after one inning.  But credit to all on defense as Oak Bay was held to just one more run for the rest of the game.  The bats really came alive in the third inning as Layritz scored four runs to take the lead for the first time.  Two runs in the fifth inning was the margin of victory as Layritz won the crown by beating Oak Bay 7-5.
The coaching staff of Mike, Jorge, Rick, and Dave could not be prouder of the way our team battled through adversity and NEVER gave up.
The players on the team were Mike King, Mike Varley, Mike Potter, Matthew Boomer, Matt Moniz, Dallas Patterson, Griffin Marsh, Jared Hanley, Eric Ashlee, Zach Tucker, and Colton Hayden.
Congratulations to Rand Automotive---the 2006 City Minors Baseball Champions!!

2006 Mini Minor Tournament Team

Once again, Central Saanich Little League hosted a Mini Minor Jamboree over the May Long weekend. It was attended by 8 keen teams from around the city. The Layritz Team was made up of 10 great kids from 5 different Mini Minor teams. They played two games on Saturday and two on Sunday, all with the same enthusiasm. In between games, there were ribbons awarded for participation in running, relay, batting, and throwing stations. The kids loved having their pitches clocked with a radar gun at the throwing station. Each team won raffle prizes of a bat bag and 2 Wendy's gift certificates. Our Layritz team made us proud making some fantastic plays, being good sports, and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Coaches Mark Baxter and Sheena Goode-Jensen would like to thank all the players for their outstanding efforts during the tournament. You all were a pleasure to have on the team.  Thanks to all the parents for helping and spending the weekend with us.
Many thanks to Darren Meads and volunteers of Central Saanich Little League for all their hard work and for showing us a great time.
